Senior Blue Belt Promotion

6 Aug

Today my son had his belt test for taekwondo from blue to senior blue.  Every test is really nerve-racking for him.  He tends to get “flu-like” symptoms sometimes before a big event.  He got it good for this one.  He started with a fever and chills last night and then woke up to it again this morning.  Of course he wasn’t going to miss his test, so with a bit of Tylenol, he showed up.  I was a little worried during their warm ups because his lips went pale.  He didn’t miss a beat though.  He prepared really well for this test.  They have to write an essay and memorize a bunch of terminology for each test and he put a lot of effort to his essay.  It was nice to see his hard work pay off.  His definitions and terminology were automatic during testing as well as all the “demonstration” stuff.
It’s really nice when your kid works hard enough at something that they really savor the reward.  There were kids that did really well and some that really didn’t study.  It was a good lesson for him in that he understood that he has total control of his test.  His efforts will determine how nervous and/or prepared he will be. This awesome lady has volunteered at this school for about 15 years.  She puts in full-time hours.  It’s a pretty big school, so a lot of the programs and tournament training wouldn’t happen without her.  She has been the second in command for a very long time and the kids love her.  We’re sad that she’s moving to the mainland this week.  My son’s instructor surprised her and she was promoted to 5th dan.  That’s a BIG deal.  She was very surprised and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.  We appreciate how she really pushed our son.  She is very knowledgeable and prepared him for tournaments really well.  We will miss her so much!He did have to puke half way through (in the bathroom, not on the floor), but he still had a great test.   Congratulations on your promotion babe!  You worked really hard on this one.

Oh! There’s a name for it. He missed six major events in kindergarten and four in 1st grade. This was the third belt test he was sick for.
